What's a thermostat?

Somehow, the concept of a thermostat is one which seems to escape my flatmate. Last night I walked out of my room to find the living room at a very toasty temperature. Now, I'm not a complete facist when it comes to using the heater (if it's really cold you need to turn on the heater, else try putting on a jumper first) but the temperature of the room was cooking, and while it was fine for the heat to be on, certainly not to the level it was at. So I walked over to the thermostat to find it set to the maximum temperature. A quick turn of the dial showed that the temperature was at that level, and I moved it down to a more comfortable temperature of 20 degrees (that's 68 degrees Fahrenheit for you imperialists).

When I questioned my flatmate why she had turned the temperature up she said she turned it to the maximum to heat the room faster (and then left it on). I had to explain that the control dial wasn't a power level, but a thermostat, and turning it to the max would make no difference to the speed by the room would warm.

Today's reason my flatmate pisses me off is she struggles with the concept of a thermostat thereby wasting electricity.

Wow.....another person who does not understand thermostats! The heating system will increase the termperature at the same rate whatever target temperature the thermostat is set at.
So......setting the thermostat to a temperature higher than the temerature you actually want will NOT mean that it reaches the temperature you want ANY faster. Got it??
