Lock the door please

Last night I woke up and went to the toilet to find our front door unlocked yet again. This is after I have asked numerous times to make sure the door is closed and locked at night, and placed two signs on the door as a reminder. I don't know what it will take to get my flat mate to do it.
Today's reason my flat mate pisses me off;
She is unable close and lock a door despite being told numerous times and ignores the reminder signs on the door.
UPDATE: For those people who don't understand this post, this reason differs from a previous complaint - the last time my flatmate didn't close the door. This time she closed it properly, but didn't lock it. Small steps... small steps...

My wife also insists on me locking the bathroom door. I think its complete nonsense as there is no way any thief is going to break into the well of the building, and then spiderman crawl up two floors to get into my toilet. If a burglar had the skill to do that, a locked door would be boring to him or her.
So I never bother to lock the door, which means that she always has to get up from bed and go and lock it herself...
What do you get from a closed door? Is it that important to you?
Try not to take everything so personal, there are more important things in life as a stupid bathroomdoor.
Even though I am not a mean person (being the ex-goalie that I am), I would take action... I have had a lot of really bad roommates in the past and I have really little tolerance for inconsiderate actions. If you have enough money... change the locks on the door and then you lock it so she can't get in. Tell her she only gets a key if she can keep it locked in the future.
Okay, I don't think we are talking about leaving a bathroom door unlocked. I believe the front door is the problem here, and it would seriously disturb me to find my home unlocked during the night. Being an unfair world, if someone comes in when the door is unsecured, the idiot flatmate would probably not be the one to have their things stolen or worse. Your blog is great - I have it bookmarked so that I can remind myself how nice it is to live with just my kids and no other adult hanging around and screwing things up.
Perhaps you should get one of those chain locks that you fasten to the door and put it up very high out of her reach? Then when you go to bed at night, you fasten it. If she wants it undone, she'd have to get a chair....physical labor usually encourages the mind to retain information. She'll get tired of moving the chair and hopefully remember to lock the door on her own?
Or, maybe you'll wake up one morning and the place will be empty and the robbers will have stolen your flat mate?? :) An unlocked door might not be all that bad after all, eh? :)
Where do you live again? (JUST KIDDING...really!)
Does the flat belong to you? Is she living there under a contract? What is the background of this living arrangement? Maybe you can find a way to get her kicked out.
Ask her to do you a favor and lock up all knives and sharp items because you are having a recurrent dream that you enter her room armed with scissors and a paring knife and proceed towards her bed where you raise your arm and...
Tell her this is where you wake up from your dream. Perhaps all you were going to do is trim her bangs or scratch your initials in her nightstand, but you aren't sure.
That chain idea makes sense. You could put a chain up on the door so that all she has to do is put the chain in its holder. You said before how the door is difficult to lock? Maybe it would be easier for her with the chain.
Oh, and please don't move out! These entries are too funny to miss!
I recently left my keys in the door lock as I forget to take them out of the door. I only knew I did it when there was a knock at my door at 7am that morning as the lady who delivers our free paper pointed it out to me. You know what it scared the crap out of me and the fact that it's given the wife plenty of ammo when she takes a pot shot at me (ouch). My advice kick their ass hard until they get it right otherwise you might all end up dead.
hmmm...tats wat im wondering about. why do they care? maybe its jesus talking to john through them. wat? u guys wanna be all holy and visit heaven when u die? anyway, she should be the one moving out not him. perhaps john has financial difficulties or has feelings for the flat or the neighbourhood. who knows? stop tellin him to leave the house u ingrates out there. this blog rocks. johns flatmate sucks. these are facts so shut up and enjoy.
I think posting on here is WAY better than keeping it bottled up inside. Bottling up frustration is not a good thing.
Okay, Couldn't you go to the hardware store and get a pressurized door closing spring thing and a lock that locks when the door closes?
Problem solved.
What will it take? Hire someone to rob the place...
Ok maybe thats a bad idea...
Wait until she is asleep and piss on her head. Pretend you were sleep walking. Works every time.
You could do three things.
1. Move out and come back a day later and glue the door shut and leave.
2. Make her go somewhere pointless outside and lock the door while she is outside.
3. Wake up one time during the night and dress up like a burgalar and just walk through the door and freak her out realy bad.
And to make a joke your roomate is so stupid she sounds like George W Bush in disguise.
I love your blog! It makes me laugh every time I read it! Sorry about the flatmate problems...My roommate's kinda crappy too sometimes, but not quite that bad.
I was thinking that this blog is fake today. Then the blog complains of something it has already complained of. I don't know if that reinforces whether I think it's fake or not. Either way, I'm jealous of the popularity of your blog fake or not.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.............
i've had my share of room mates and what not (boarding schools are the bomb) and it has always been fun despite the marriage like arguments! But i never knew that one could harvest such vast fields of comments on the subject!
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha .........
I think you should get defective keys made, switch them with hers before you go on a weekend trip, naturally she has to leave before you go on your trip...I think after being locked out for a weekend she will get a clue about locks.

I've heard that no one locks their doors up in Canada, maybe you should ship your roomate there? Even if they do lock their doors, it's still not a bad idea.
Do you live in Christchurch? Feckin' hell, this has to be my old flatmate...
I totally understand how you feel. My mom does the same thing--forgetting to lock doors. Drives me frigging insane.
I think we live with the same person. Except mine is male. Many times we've had the discussion of how "if you lock the door, it doesn't accidentally open" and "it's not that hard to lock the door since you're right there closing it".
Sadly neither conversation worked. If this keeps up, I'm changing the locks while he's out.
I don't intend to be mean to anyone, but some of you should read a little more closely. Here I'm speaking specifically to those who made comments like "what's the big deal about not locking a bathroom door." I know when the words "toilet" and "door" appear in the same sentence, "bathroom door" does come to mind, but if you actually read it, you'd see that the flatmate is leaving the "front door" unlocked, i.e. the door from which strangers could easily enter and wreak all sorts of havoc. So yes, I would say that's kind of a big deal. This blog is awesome by the way, and to all those who complain about this being backstabbing or passive aggressive, who's really hurt by it? None of us know who this girl is, and in all likelihood never will. But we can laugh at her stupidity and annoyingness, and that's awesome.
Two Words - Home Invasion.
Do a Google search and you'll be surprised.
We live out in the country where people leave keys in their cars and their house doors unlocked. Not me.
Maybe it's because I've always lived in a somewhat urban area, but I've never known anyone to habitually forget to lock the front door. That's a whole new level of idiocy I never knew was possible.
Now and then we all have moments of stupidity and leave the keys in the door or are just too drunk to remember to lock the door, but it's never a recurring event. There are psychos and thieves out there!
My ex-housemate (thanks god, he's history ) had the same problem. He would go out from front door and left it CLOSED but unlocked and came back from back door with door wide open. We do not live in a safe neighborhood and yet he doesn't close the door. After telling him politely for so many times, one day I came home and found my cat was wondering outside ! I totally lost it and screamed at him in the face, calling him names; all he said was " oh.. I'm sorry. I forgot.. "
My husband's comment for him " He smoked (weed) himself retarded"
Some people are borned like that. Give her time! Gosh!
"Some people are borned like that. Give her time! Gosh!" ???
I Dont think so, ive been upset with this problem myself. I put a note on the door, but someone CROSSED my sign and put a sign 'keep the door open'. I would have thought this is to the fact that their friends always came over and they just couldnt be bother to open the door for them, eventhough his room is NEXT to the flat door.
The irony is, somebody came in to our flat today and broke in to his room and my other friend's room and took some expensive stuff.
I wouldnt say im happy with this, It's a very bad news for all of us..
just want to remind you all, if your flat mates bothers you with all the rules, please PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ,FORGOT ABOUT YOUR EGO AND LAZYNESS...PLEASE
